Brake pipe fitting help please

Post by Si Richards »

I have started to install the brake pipes today and set about working out which one goes where. The only one left is the main front pipe but it doesn't appear to be long enough. I believe the problem maybe that the front chassis Tee Union mounting screw has been fitted on the wrong side (possibly for a left hand drive car) as if it were on the Off side rather than the Near Side as can be seen in the picture it would work. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Si

Yep reality is sinking in that it's definitely on the wrong side but unless you guys tell me otherwise the easiest fix is for Westfields to make me up a slightly longer pipe?

Yep - that'll be what I would do. Can't see how the positioning of that Tee would change the price of fish. Does your other pipe need shortening, then Si?

I assume you'll have access to a good flaring tool - shouldn't be too much hassle to sort out.

Seems like the easiest way to me. Luckily no shortening should be required as I can swap the N/S pipe for the O/S pipe (yankee style!!!!!)

Still it will make it unique I guess :P :P :P

No bad news at all.

Here is a picture. More are in the album on my site. If you need more detail about the brake lines, let me know. I have plenty of pictures. If you check out the album, you will find numerous pictures of the brake line runs.

The union is on the off side. You need to run the brake lines on the near side, through the tunnel. The lines are plenty long.

Hi Si,

If you're impatient (like me!) then Halfrauds stock both copper brake pipe and a pipe flaring kit. If you can wait a day or two, then one of these is very good: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LASER-3434-HA ... 4acbdd0392

I didn't build my car. Rather, I restored a ratty example. I had no prior experience of making brake lines, but found it a doddle..........

Good luck with the build.

ps Where are you? Someone may be local enough to loan you a flaring tool.

I've just done a lot of research as was well outbid on a Moprod tool a few days ago (old school tool that folks swear by - not at).

This Franklin-made tool has an excellent reputation, and similarly priced to Splat's suggestion:

Thanks chaps I will have a chat with Westfield tomorrow and see what the lead time will be on them. Plenty to keep me occupied in the meantime.

Luckily for me my brother builds cars for a living so has a font of flaring tools but still would like Westfield to make me one as punishment!!!!
