W11 for sale on ebay.

Post by techbod »

Bit of a strange one this, no picture and few details from a dealer in shropshire, who I can't find a web page for...

Edit: from the description this looks rather like a W11 that showed up for sale not long ago and seems to have made its way to another dealer. From the description is it this one (original ad): http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3119159.htm

EditEdit:They've added pictures now, apart from the roundel it looks the same.

How does he get the rear clam off with that roll bar? And that is the most unflattering bonnet hump ever - looks as if it was moulded from a buck made of plywood and just had the rough edges taken off. Each to their own! Why dry sump a cross flow and then still have to put a hump in the bonnet?

I hate to speak badly of a fellow eleven owner, but that bonnet is what we Yanks would call "butt ugly". On the positive side, the car does seem to come with a lot of spares, including another bonnet. At least when it was posted on Pistonheads it did..... Hopefully the spare bonnet is not mutilated like the one in the picture.

Problem with the x flow is the carb, also twin webbers is a problem because the distributor does not allow you to mount the carbs low enough to clear the bonnet. So i need to get rid of the distributor as the twin webbers are a must for me and definately no hump.
The sump on the xflow is only 1/2 an inch lower than the gearbox so there is not much advantage there.

The roll bars on an Eleven are never easy, but this one really damages the flowing lines by looking totally out of place with its angular construction.
However it will no doubt be a lot of fun to drive and will give a lot of pleasure to someone.

Speaking of ungainly roll bars....
How on earth will they get in and out of the vehicle? And just how tall do you have to be to need something that high? Oh well - judge not lest ye be.. etc

As well as the huge roll bar, they appear to have fitted the steering wheel on the wrong side...

That car was supposed to have been prepped for SCCA racing, which means a roll bar that clears the driver's head by 6", when the car is upside down (on a line drawn from the front of the chassis to the top of the roll bar, the driver has to be clear by 6"). If the driver is tall, so is the roll bar. Note that there is a hoop behind the instrument panel as well. In the mid 80s, a change in roll bar/cage structure came into effect. Evidently, this car was started prior to the requirement for a more protective cage in open cars. That requirement, and the need for a fuel cell, probably stopped the project dead. Anyway, it would have never been competitive against the mid engine, much lighter racers that were common at that time.

Yes, there are a couple of XIs here with full cages. Hideous Ugly.

I am pretty sure that the owner has had this one for a couple of decades, if not three. It is an early chassis version, with a few modifications. It has new front control arms with rod ends, and rod ends on the rear control arms. The dampers have been re mounted as well. Note the damper mounting plates on the axle, inboard of the control arm plates.

The engine appears to be mounted a bit far forward, like the Ford version of this chassis. 'There are a few other modifications that I noticed, such as the battery tray mounted way forward, and a few extra elements added to the chassis in the cockpit and rear section.

The car is actually a bit harder to build than a kit in the crate, as it now has to be disassembled, restored, and re assembled. Note that the suspension is just hanging on the chassis, sans nuts for the relatively new bolts.

If the kit is complete, it would be a nice project for someone, provided it was purchased at a very low price.

A Sawzall takes care of that ugly roll bar.

Note the Spridget hanging pedal box. This is a later car than mine, which has a fabricated pedal box. Maybe mid 80s, first revision of the early chassis.
