Did you have to make large cut outs in the bonnet to get it properly closed without touching? Any pictures of that?

Latest pics of the installation. Sorry Jack - didn't get one with the bonnet on. Will try to do so. Highest point is the oil filler but I plan to use a spare cam cover without the oil filler on the engine and then utilise one of the cylinder head screw in core plugs (that goes through to oil gallery) the as an oil filler / extra breather. That should ensure the XV bulge clears OK. MoT booked for Thursday first thing.

Christmas Joy! MoT passed, but more importantly the car made it to Peterborough and back without incident. Feels a little lean at idle but plugs not looking too bad so adequate for "running in" purposes. When warm I've noticed the acetal adaptor that carries the Lumention ignition chopper works loose causing an occasional stumble. Easily fixed. Engine now nicely oil tight - at least over the 30 miles round trip. More than can be said for the Ford gearbox which has a steady weep (just like the old Midget box!). Maybe because I've used synthetic oil in it - I'm sure it would be fine with any old G4 rated mineral oil. So, Oundle classic sprint on the 28th, another hour or so of road use and should be ready for the rolling road session. Then change the cheap 20-50 mineral oil for some nice synthetic race oil. Gearlever position not ideal - you Type 9 users will be familiar with that. Maybe 4" too far back. Liveable, but not good for the heat of battle. Now to hatch a cunning plan for a brake improvement. Have not had any problems with leaking in either my Type 9 or Datsun 210 boxes with Royal Purple or Redline Shockproof Light synthetics, and it has been many years for the Datsun, and more than 3 years for the Type 9.

Cobras, or D Type Jaguars have the same problem with the gear levers, and the factory fix was a forward bent lever. I installed a straight lever, short throw shifter for the Type 9 from SP Components, but a forward bent shifter can be had as well. Or, a bit of heating with a torch and a piece of pipe can do the trick provided you have the longer gear lever (Spidget application shifter). I didn't cut the straight lever, as the short throw greatly increased the effort, and the slightly longer lever gave just the right amount of mechanical effort.

Interestingly enough, the owner of the RHD Type 9 car has not complained about the straight gear lever position. but he is 6' tall. I am about 5'5", and while the lever felt a bit far back to start with, I got used to it after a few miles.

Another 40 mins of road work completed without incident. Should be ready now for being ragged on the rolling road! Also fitted the Malc made XV type bulge sourced via Ben. Apologies for lopping off the front three inches Malc but figured I need the airflow, as per later XV's. Wiring the edge was beyond me but at least it ifs folded over! Having cut out the bonnet beneath the ally bulge I also needed to stiffen the trailing edge of the bonnet so a nice piece of high tech cellulose composite (birch ply!) epoxied in place about 70 mm forward from the scuttle. Really needed that before I modified it as the the rear edge always lifted at speed.
