Gear selection

Post by Morris »

Now that I'm back on the forum, I thought I'd share my interior that is now almost complete, with just the door pockets to finish off.

Because my home made remote gear selection mechanism can result in difficulty in locating 1st, I've fitted a reverse lockout tab that doubles as a guide when selecting 1st and dropping down from 3rd to 2nd.

The tab lays flat during forward driving, and is rotated by 90° to enable selection of reverse. It works well and makes for an even more enjoyable drive.

Very nice finish on your interior, Morris! It must have taken a long while to machine-turn the dash. Do tell us a little more about your gearbox remote, please? A Series or type 9 (or other)?

Cheers!

Thank you Jon.

I did all the engine turning on a pillar drill using an old exhaust valve with a disc of scotchbrite superglued on the end. It was necessary to use WD40 as lubricant to prevent unwanted deep scratching, and each disc lasted for approx 10 circles.

The setting up took time, but then it was pretty quick to bang off the swirls. The throat of my bench mounted pillar drill is limited, so it was important to plan my swirls to overlap the previous one correctly. The engine bulkhead was more challenging, being deeper than the dash.

My gearbox is a Ford Type 9, but being a cheapskate I made up a mechanical remote linkage rather than have it professionally shortened, hence the lack of a built-in reverse failsafe and reverse light switch. My 'heath-robinson' solutions work fine, and add more excitement to the driving experience.

I have since cut down the large diameter aluminium remote gear stick and replaced it with a 8 mm stainless rod and aluminium ball for that more authentic look!

Fabulous work there. A very high standard pf presentation. Makes my car look a bit of a shed (it is, but I love it even moreso). I like your reverse lock out. The version on my R5 racer is a sprung door hinge. Heath Robinson, but effective.

Splat will be along in a minute to ask if it has been needed in the past 10+ years. Nope. It has not turned a wheel under its own power! :D

Thank you Jon.

It looks good now, but it's longevity in this condition has yet to be proven...

I'm sure Heath Robinson was the order of the day for racing cars back in the glory days 🙂
